Ticks in Malaysia are a common problem for all cat and dog owners. Tick removal is an even bigger pain.
Constantly using chemicals is bothersome, as well as potentially unhealthy to your pet, your children who come in contact with your pet and your home (and the environment). They're also expensive, and (in my experience) only marginally effective.
The best solution is to daily give your pet a quick once over to make sure there are no ticks (early removal means no opportunity for ticks to breed and multiply on your pet).
But what if you do find a tick?
Removal by fingers or using tweezers is dangerous - both ways irritate the tick or leave tick mouth parts still attached to the pet. Especially as we squeeze the tick's abdomen, causing it to regurgitate saliva and its stomach contents directly into the pet, potentially transmitting tick borne diseases (lyme disease, tick fever etc).
The safest way to remove ticks is using the O'tom tick remover. It removes ticks :

I'd recommend keeping a small container to store the tick removers in. Then when you need to use it, pour some alcohol, methylated spirits or vinegar in the container, after you remove the tick using the twister it will still be alive, just drop the live tick into the alcohol or vinegar for disposal (don't just throw it away because it might make it's way back to your pet.. water will nto kill ticks). You can squish it, but I'm squeamish !
